as the women's wing of the old darlinghurst gaol from 1841 to 1920 the cell block theatre held some of sydney's most notorious criminals including the 'queen of the underworld' kate leigh.

preserving its colourful history in more than just name, the cell block theatre is a vivid reminder of sydney's dubious origins. with its original 10m high sandstone walls and barred windows still in place, the building today stands within the grounds of the national art school, and is a unique heritage cathedral-like space to host events.
